COVID-19 EMERGENCY: Extension of the validity of expiring documents

Extension of validity of passports, identity cards and driving licenses

The validity of identity documents (passport and paper or electronic identity card) that have expired from 17 March onwards, has been extended until 31 August 2020 (Legislative Decree n. 18 of 17 March 2020).
Thie extension concerns only their use as I.D. documents, but not their use as travel documents. The validity as travel douments remains the expiry date indicated on the document itself.
Also the validity of Italian driving licenses that have expired or will expire between 1 February and 31 August 2020 has been extended until 31 August 2020.

• Extension of validity of residence permits for foreigners and period of stay in Italy with or without a visa

The Italian Government has extended the validity of all residence permits, issued to foreigners in Italy and expiring between 31 January and 15 April 2020, until 15 June 2020.

Foreign citizens who have entered in Italy with visa or visa-free can stay in Italy beyond the period granted due to force majeure and they are not due to fullfill further formalities. Foreigners will be obliged to leave the Italian territory as soon as the current impediments are overcome.
