The Consul General of Italy in Jerusalem, Fabio Sokolowicz, during a mission today in the Gaza Strip

Gaza Strip, 3 April 2019

The Consul General of Italy in Jerusalem, Fabio Sokolowicz, during a mission today in the Gaza Strip, visited the Tuffah food aid distribution center and the Burej health center, both managed by UNRWA, an agency that provides primary services to 1.3 million refugees from the Strip (out of a total of 2 million inhabitants). The mission allowed to see first-hand the essential role of the UN agency, to which Italy ensures an important contribution, to avoid the collapse of the Palestinian enclave. The food distribution center in Tuffah is one of 10 food aid distribution centers that provide basic foodstuffs (including rice and flour) in Gaza to around 1 million Palestinian refugees in extreme poverty. The Burej hospital is instead one of 22 health centers that provide primary care to refugees, with an average of over 3 million visits a year. The General Commissioner of UNRWA, Pierre Krahenbuhl, is visiting Italy in these days.
